REI Recognised at 2026 SAPOA Journalism Awards
Recognition for property-focused journalism
Real Estate Investor Magazine (REI) has been named runner-up for Property News Website of the Year at the 2026 SAPOA Journalism Awards for Excellence.
The recognition was announced during the South African Property Owners Association's (SAPOA) 60th Annual Convention, held at Sun City from 29 September to 1 October 2026. REI was also shortlisted in two additional categories: Property Publication of the Year and Digital and Broadcast Media.
The awards form part of SAPOA's recognition of journalism covering South Africa's property sector and built environment. SAPOA's published criteria place emphasis on accuracy, research, relevance, accessibility and meaningful industry analysis, rather than simply reproducing announcements or press releases.
A changing role for property media
Property journalism plays an important role in explaining developments that affect property owners, investors, occupiers and other industry participants.
Commercial property markets involve a wide range of factors, including:
- Economic conditions and interest rates
- Development and investment activity
- Municipal infrastructure
- Property valuations and operating costs
- Supply and demand
- Regulatory and legislative changes
- Investment and transaction trends
For readers, reporting on these issues can provide context that is not always available from individual company announcements.
According to REI's report on the awards, the 2026 judging panel highlighted the importance of distinguishing fact from opinion, providing greater transparency around sponsored content and developing more independent reporting. The judges also encouraged journalists to look beyond press releases and ask more substantive questions about developments affecting the sector.
What the awards recognise
SAPOA's published criteria for its journalism categories provide an indication of what is expected from professional property reporting.
For news journalism, the criteria include:
- A strong understanding of the property issue being reported
- Thorough research
- A balanced range of credible sources
- Accurate and clearly presented facts
- Reporting that contributes to wider industry discussion
For property news websites, SAPOA also considers whether content is current, relevant, well structured and accessible, together with indicators such as readership, newsletter subscriptions, social-media engagement and search performance.
Why accuracy and transparency matter
The property sector regularly deals with significant financial decisions. Information about market conditions, transactions, developments and regulations can influence decisions by businesses, investors, landlords and tenants.
This makes clear sourcing particularly important.
A useful property article should distinguish between verified information, analysis and opinion, while identifying the source of claims and providing sufficient context for readers to understand the issue.
The 2026 SAPOA awards therefore provide more than recognition for individual publications. They also highlight the continuing role of specialist property media in providing information that is researched, understandable and relevant to the South African real estate market.
As the property sector continues to evolve, the quality and transparency of information available to market participants remains an important part of informed decision-making.
